Converse University recently held its 137th Fall Convocation in the Zimmerli Performance Center at Twichell Auditorium. This annual tradition brings together the university community to mark the beginning of the academic year, reflect on Converse values,
and recognize outstanding faculty and students. The ceremony included an invocation by John Garcia, President of the Religious Life Council, and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Hayley Benton, Vice President of the Student Government Association. Ninel Martinez-Macedo, President of the Student Government Association, delivered a speech reflecting on her journey and encouraging personal growth. President Boone J. Hopkins formally opened the academic session, welcoming the class of 2030 and wishing the best to the class of 2027, emphasizing the importance of belonging and mutual support. Dr. Jeffrey H. Barker Academic Excellence Award was presented to Dr. James “JJ” Lies, Assistant Professor of Education and Chair of the Education Department. Additionally, Gillian White Goodrich ’68 received the 2026 Dexter Edgar Converse Award, the university's highest honor, for her leadership, generosity, and involvement.
