Electricity prices across the United States have increased despite President Trump's previous assurances to reduce them significantly. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), residential electricity rates rose by 7.3% from April
2025 to April 2026, reaching an average of 18.83 cents per kilowatt-hour. Since President Trump returned to office in January of the previous year, prices have surged by over 18%. This development complicates Trump's pre-election promise to cut energy prices in half within 18 months of his inauguration, a deadline that recently passed. The administration's strategy included expedited permitting and expanded domestic oil and gas production, but these measures have not yet resulted in the promised reductions.
