What's Happening?
The Ministry of Agriculture in Liberia, in partnership with the World Bank, is conducting a ten-day Implementation Support Mission to evaluate the progress of the Rural Economic Transformation Project
(RETRAP). This initiative, valued at $161 million, aims to enhance rural livelihoods, strengthen agribusiness, and promote sustainable agricultural development across Liberia. The mission, led by Dr. Kadir Osman Gyasi from the World Bank, is reviewing the project's achievements, identifying challenges, and providing technical guidance to ensure sustainable and inclusive results. RETRAP focuses on increasing income and resilience for rural households by promoting sustainable agricultural practices, expanding access to marketing infrastructure, and strengthening value chains for cassava, rubber, and livestock. Since 2023, the project has awarded $10 million in matching grants to 64 agribusiness beneficiaries, aiding in the construction of modern processing facilities and improving market access.
