What's Happening?
Taiwan's space chief, Wu Jong-shinn, has emphasized the urgent need for the island to develop its own satellite communications network to ensure resilience during potential conflicts with China. Taiwan plans to launch six low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites by 2027 as part of its Beyond 5G LEO Satellite program. This initiative aims to secure internet and phone services in case of disruptions to subsea telecom cables, which have previously been severed, causing significant communication outages.
Why It's Important?
The development of Taiwan's satellite network is crucial for maintaining communication resilience in the face of potential Chinese aggression. As China intensifies military pressure on Taiwan, the island's ability to maintain independent communication channels becomes vital for national security. This move also reflects Taiwan's strategic efforts to reduce reliance on foreign satellite operators, ensuring greater control over its communication infrastructure during crises.
What's Next?
Taiwan is actively partnering with international satellite companies to bolster its communication capabilities. The island is in talks with several providers, including Eutelsat and Astranis, to secure backup telecommunications. Taiwan's efforts to develop its own technology and launch additional satellites will continue, aiming to enhance its communication resilience by 2031.
