What's Happening?
Alia Rachid, managing director of Alsara Investment Group and founder of Fromm., is pushing forward with her design platform, Fromm.Lab, despite ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Fromm.Lab has partnered with the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation
Park (Spark) in the UAE to support emerging design talent. This collaboration aims to develop a program focused on furniture and design, promoting creative exchange and opportunities in the regional design sector. Fromm.Lab, established in 2023, serves as a creative hub connecting Qatar's design world with Milan, a key global market. The platform recently showcased an exhibition at Milan Design Week, featuring works from its international design competition. The full exhibition is set to debut at the Design Doha Biennale, postponed to November 2026 due to regional unrest.
Why It's Important?
The continuation of Fromm.Lab's initiatives highlights the resilience and commitment to cultural and economic development in the Gulf region, even amidst geopolitical tensions. By fostering international collaboration and supporting emerging designers, Fromm.Lab is contributing to the growth of the creative industries in the Middle East. This effort aligns with the broader vision of Gulf Cooperation Council countries to enhance their creative sectors. The partnership with Spark and the international exposure provided by events like Milan Design Week and the Design Doha Biennale are crucial for positioning the Gulf as a significant player in the global design landscape.
What's Next?
The postponed Design Doha Biennale, now scheduled for November 2026, will be a significant event for Fromm.Lab, providing a platform for showcasing the work of emerging designers and furthering international collaboration. The ongoing support from Gulf governments and organizations like Spark suggests continued investment in the creative industries. This could lead to more partnerships and initiatives aimed at integrating Middle Eastern design into the global market. The success of these efforts may influence other regions to adopt similar strategies for cultural and economic development.
