What's Happening?
The Chizami Community Seed Bank, managed by the Chizami Women Society, has been recognized for its efforts in promoting climate-resilient agriculture. Established in 2018, the seed bank conserves over 150 traditional seed varieties, including paddy, maize,
millets, and various beans and vegetables. The initiative aims to preserve agrobiodiversity and support sustainable agricultural practices. The seed bank received acknowledgment during an episode of 'Mann Ki Baat,' where Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised its role in conserving traditional crop diversity. The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Phek has been providing technical support to the seed bank since 2024, emphasizing the importance of indigenous germplasm for long-term food security. The program also highlighted the role of vermicomposting in improving soil fertility, offering an eco-friendly and income-generating option for farmers.
