What's Happening?
The National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), under South Korea's Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy, is hosting the 15th East Asia Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Analysis Training. This three-day program, running from Monday
through Wednesday, is taking place in Seoul and its metropolitan area. Approximately 50 officials and experts from six Asia-Pacific countries—Laos, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Thailand—are participating. The training aims to disseminate South Korea's advanced environmental analysis technologies to the region, thereby strengthening POPs monitoring and reduction capabilities across East Asia. Since 2011, South Korea has been involved in international cooperation projects to support the Stockholm Convention, sharing POPs management information and transferring analytical technologies to developing nations.

This initiative is crucial for global environmental health, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, which faces significant environmental challenges. Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemicals that can travel long distances, accumulate in the food chain, and pose serious risks to human health and the environment. By sharing advanced analytical technologies, South Korea is helping to build capacity in neighboring countries to detect, monitor, and manage these hazardous substances more effectively. This collaborative effort supports the implementation of the Stockholm Convention, an international treaty designed to eliminate or restrict the production and use of POPs. Enhanced regional monitoring and reduction capabilities will contribute to a healthier environment and safer food supplies, benefiting millions across East Asia and potentially reducing the transboundary movement of these pollutants.
What's Next?
The three-day training program includes a series of lectures, policy sessions, field training, and site visits. On the first day, experts will discuss POPs management policy and monitoring results, with participants presenting their own findings. The second day involves hands-on field training in ambient air sampling at the Metropolitan Air Quality Research Station. The final day will feature comprehensive practical training, including laboratory exercises focused on analyzing polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which are flame retardants strictly regulated under the Stockholm Convention. Following this training, participating nations are expected to apply the acquired knowledge and technologies to improve their national POPs management programs. South Korea's NIER has stated its commitment to continuing to build an effective foundation for international cooperation in addressing trace hazardous substances.
