The study, conducted by researchers in Montreal, assigned participants to one of four groups: 8.5 hours of sleep with exercise, 8.5 hours of sleep with rest, 4.5 hours of sleep with exercise, and 4.5 hours of sleep with rest. The exercise involved moderate cycling at 55-60% of maximum aerobic capacity, performed three hours before a learning session. Memory was assessed by how well individuals could recall face and name pairs after their sleep period. The findings indicate that deep slow-wave sleep played a crucial role in mediating the link between exercise and improved memory in the short-sleep group.
