Teledyne Flir, a U.S.-based sensor specialist, has launched a new drone-in-a-box system named SkyCarrier, designed for rapid deployment from moving ground and maritime platforms. This system is tailored to meet the demands of modern battlefield scenarios, as observed in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The SkyCarrier facilitates the launch and retrieval of unmanned aerial systems, such as the SkyRaider R80D and SkyRanger R70 drones, from vehicles like boats and pick-up trucks. A key feature of this system is its optional tethering capability, which allows drones to operate while connected to a power and data source, significantly enhancing operational duration. This tethering concept has proven effective in military applications, particularly in Ukraine, where it has been used successfully. The system can autonomously deploy and recover drones while the platform is in motion, achieving speeds of up to 50 km/h. The drones are designed to return to their launch platform independently after completing missions.
