What's Happening?
In November 2020, the Ethiopian government initiated military operations against the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), the ruling party in the Tigray region. This conflict has led to significant
destruction of civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and businesses, due to shelling and looting by Ethiopian federal forces, regional militias, and Eritrean armed forces. The ongoing fighting and restrictions on humanitarian access have displaced over two million people, with thousands fleeing to Sudan. The situation has left at least 2.3 million people in need of assistance.
Why It's Important?
The conflict in Tigray has severe humanitarian implications, with millions displaced and in need of aid. The involvement of Eritrean forces and the destruction of civilian infrastructure have raised international concerns about human rights violations. The situation threatens regional stability in the Horn of Africa, a region already plagued by conflict and humanitarian crises. The Ethiopian government's actions have drawn criticism from international bodies, including the United Nations, which has called for investigations into possible war crimes.
