What's Happening?
The MOSI site in Tampa is progressing with plans for a new indoor sports facility as part of a $70 million redevelopment project. The Board of County Commissioners has approved an interlocal agreement
with the Tampa Sports Authority, allocating over $3 million to the project. The funding will come from the county’s tourist development tax fund, following a recommendation to avoid using Countywide Construction Fund money. The design phase will be led by OSPORTS, a firm with extensive experience in similar projects. The facility will feature 11 all-purpose courts for volleyball and basketball, along with amenities such as a sports lounge and event space. The project aims to open the facility by 2028.
Why It's Important?
The development of the indoor sports complex is expected to significantly boost sports tourism in Hillsborough County, contributing to local economic growth. By leveraging the MOSI site, the project aims to create a hub for science, technology, and innovation, including multifamily housing and retail spaces. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance community infrastructure and attract visitors, potentially transforming the area into a major economic driver. The use of tourist development tax funds underscores the project's potential to draw visitors and generate revenue for the county.
What's Next?
The design phase will proceed with OSPORTS, focusing on integrating the MOSI West building into the facility's plans. Meetings with the master developer will ensure coordination on the broader redevelopment project, which may include an ice hockey facility. The county will vote on the funding change in November, and construction cost estimates will be presented once the design is 90% complete. The project is positioned as a catalyst for further economic development in the region.
