What's Happening?
A public-private partnership has commenced construction on Northpoint on Jarvis Creek, a 157-unit workforce housing development on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The project is a collaboration between the Town of Hilton Head Island, OneStreet Residential,
and RBC Community Investments. It aims to provide affordable housing options for households earning between 60% and 150% of the area median income (AMI). The development will feature one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, with at least 50% of units reserved for those earning between 60% and 80% of the AMI. The project is expected to begin leasing this summer and be completed by next summer.
Why It's Important?
The Northpoint on Jarvis Creek project addresses a critical need for affordable housing on Hilton Head Island, where housing costs have been a barrier for many working families. By providing affordable rental options, the development supports the local workforce, which is essential for sustaining the island's economy, particularly in the tourism and service sectors. This initiative also reflects a growing trend of public-private partnerships in addressing housing shortages, demonstrating a collaborative approach to community development. The project could serve as a model for other regions facing similar housing challenges.
What's Next?
As construction progresses, the development team will focus on meeting project timelines and ensuring that the housing units are ready for occupancy by next summer. The success of this project could lead to further investments in workforce housing on Hilton Head Island and beyond. Local government and community leaders may explore additional partnerships to expand affordable housing options, while monitoring the project's impact on the local economy and quality of life for residents.
