What's Happening?
A new cold storage facility has been inaugurated in Kabul by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock. The facility, named 'Habib Jamalzai Cold Storage', has a capacity of 3,000 metric tonnes
and was built at a cost of $30 million. It aims to reduce agricultural waste, cut imports, and strengthen Afghanistan's economy. The opening ceremony was attended by Mawlawi Sadr Azam Osmani, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, and other officials. The facility is expected to prevent crop losses and encourage private sector investment in agriculture. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has introduced a five-year tax exemption for cold storage developers to further boost investment.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the cold storage facility is a significant step towards improving Afghanistan's agricultural sector. By reducing waste and preserving the quality of produce, the facility can help stabilize food supply and prices. This development is crucial for Afghanistan's economy, which relies heavily on agriculture. The tax exemption for cold storage developers is likely to attract more investment, creating jobs and enhancing food security. The facility also represents a move towards self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on imports and strengthening the national economy.
