Westpac is set to deploy new 'secure routers' across its 550 branches over the next year, incorporating post-quantum cryptography preparations into its security strategy. The bank is upgrading from Cisco 4000 series integrated services routers to the 8200
series, which were unveiled at a US conference in June. These routers are designed to secure WAN transport in the post-quantum era, addressing potential future threats from quantum computing. The rollout will require personnel onsite for device connection, with initial configuration and ongoing updates being automated. Westpac's secure network services team, led by Wayne Bonnet, is responsible for all connectivity for the bank, both domestically and internationally, and is monitoring developments in agentic AI to enhance operations.
