A study by Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health has revealed widespread lithium contamination in drinking water across the Western United States, particularly affecting Tribal communities. Researchers analyzed water samples from 673 homes
and urine samples from 613 participants over a decade. The study found that a significant portion of water samples exceeded the U.S. Geological Survey's lithium screening level. Despite regional variability, urinary lithium levels remained consistent, indicating long-term exposure. The study highlights the role of drinking water as a major source of lithium exposure.
