What's Happening?
Rio2 Limited has commenced the commissioning phase for a new Tailings Filtration Facility (TFF) at its Condestable Copper Mine in Peru. This facility, which represents a $27 million investment, is designed
to process 100% of the mine's current tailings output with a capacity of 8,400 tons per day. The transition to dry-stack tailings is a significant operational milestone, enhancing safety and environmental standards. The facility is expected to be fully operational by the third quarter of 2026, with environmental approval anticipated in the same period. The TFF will initially use existing tailings impoundment facilities before moving to a new Tailings Storage Facility, which is designed for future expansion.
Why It's Important?
The commissioning of the TFF at Condestable Mine is a critical step in improving the environmental sustainability of mining operations. By increasing water recovery from 60% to nearly 90%, the facility reduces the need for additional water permits and minimizes the impact on local water resources. This aligns with global trends towards more sustainable mining practices and could set a precedent for other mining operations. The investment also supports Rio2's commitment to the Copper Mark Certification, enhancing its reputation in the industry. The facility's ability to accommodate future production expansions positions Rio2 for potential growth in the copper market.
