What's Happening?
Kongsberg Maritime has entered into a contract with Med Marine, a Turkish shipbuilder and tugboat operator, to supply advanced azimuth thrusters and towing winches for nine new tug designs. This agreement
includes the supply of US series azimuth thrusters and a mix of electric and hydraulic towing winches. Notably, Med Marine's new 'VoltRA' all-electric tug will feature Kongsberg's US205 azimuth thruster. The contract covers eight shipsets of US255 azimuth thrusters for Med Marine's RAmparts 2500-W and RAstar 3200-W tug designs. The electric winches, introduced earlier this year, are designed to meet the operational demands of next-generation electric tug operations, offering improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration between Kongsberg Maritime and Med Marine represents a significant step towards sustainable maritime operations. The integration of advanced thruster and winch technology in tugboats supports the industry's shift towards hybrid and all-electric propulsion systems. This transition is crucial for reducing the maritime sector's carbon footprint and aligning with global environmental goals. The development of electric tugs not only enhances operational efficiency but also positions Med Marine as a leader in innovative and eco-friendly maritime solutions, potentially influencing industry standards and practices.
