Researchers from Tarleton State University have discovered that natural polysaccharides extracted from okra and fenugreek can effectively remove microplastics from polluted water. The study found that okra extract removed up to 80% of microplastics from ocean
water, while fenugreek was most effective in groundwater, eliminating up to 90%. These plant-based powders could serve as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic polyacrylamide, a commonly used chemical in water treatment that is not biodegradable. The extracts work by binding to microplastics, forming larger clumps that sink to the bottom and can be easily separated from the water.
