What's Happening?
The Oregon Department of Emergency Management is organizing a series of free webinars aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness in rural communities. The initiative, titled 'Rural Communities Prepared for Disasters,' consists of two sessions designed to
equip participants with essential tools and resources for disaster response and recovery. The first session, scheduled for April 22, will focus on communication systems during disasters, evacuation protocols, and backup power options. The second session, set for May 13, will address funding for disaster recovery, the recovery process, and the role of long-term recovery groups. Kayla Thompson, the community preparedness coordinator, emphasized the importance of pre-disaster information and connections to strengthen community resilience.
Why It's Important?
These webinars are crucial for rural communities that often face unique challenges during disasters due to limited resources and infrastructure. By providing tailored insights and strategies, the Oregon Department of Emergency Management aims to enhance the resilience of these communities against floods, extreme heat, and wildfires. The initiative underscores the importance of preparedness and informed response, potentially reducing the impact of disasters on vulnerable populations. Furthermore, understanding recovery processes and funding can expedite rebuilding efforts, ensuring communities can return to normalcy more swiftly.
What's Next?
Participants can register for the webinars through the Oregon Department of Emergency Management’s Zoom registration page. The sessions will be recorded and made available on the agency’s YouTube channel, allowing broader access to the information shared. As communities engage with these resources, there may be increased collaboration and formation of long-term recovery groups, fostering a more robust network for disaster response and recovery. The initiative could also inspire similar programs in other states, promoting nationwide improvements in disaster preparedness.
