What's Happening?
Georgia Power has received approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission to certify five new utility-scale solar power purchase agreements (PPAs). These agreements will support the company's Clean and Renewable Energy Subscription (CARES) 2023 program, which allows commercial and industrial customers to purchase subscriptions for renewable energy production. The new solar facilities will collectively provide 1,068 megawatts (MW) of power and will be constructed and maintained by third-party companies. The projects were selected through a competitive solicitation process overseen by an independent evaluator and PSC staff. The facilities will be located across Georgia, including Mitchell, Coffee, Wilkinson, Jefferson, and Laurens counties, with varying capacities and contract durations.
Why It's Important?
The approval of these solar facilities marks a significant step in Georgia Power's efforts to diversify its energy generation portfolio and increase the reliability of its services. By expanding its renewable energy resources, Georgia Power aims to meet growing customer demand for sustainable energy solutions. This initiative aligns with broader industry trends towards clean energy and supports Georgia Power's commitment to delivering carbon-free energy. The new solar projects are expected to provide long-term benefits to customers, including energy and capacity advantages, while contributing to the state's environmental goals.
What's Next?
Georgia Power plans to continue expanding its renewable energy portfolio through competitive RFP processes. The company has issued the CARES 2025 RFP, targeting up to 2,000 MW of utility-scale solar projects, with bids due in August. These projects are expected to become operational by 2028. Additionally, Georgia Power's 2025 Integrated Resource Plan outlines the procurement of up to 4,000 MW of renewable resources by 2035, with initial targets set for 1,100 MW of new resources. The company anticipates issuing further RFPs in 2026 to achieve these goals.
