What's Happening?
Arrowhead Game Studios, the developers of Helldivers 2, have addressed concerns regarding the game's large install size on PC, which stands at 141.51GB. The studio explained that the size is due to the need to optimize performance for players using older hard-disk drives (HDDs). By duplicating data, the game reduces 'seek time' on these slower drives, ensuring smoother gameplay. This approach is intended to accommodate the approximately 12% of Steam users who still rely on HDDs, according to the studio's analysis.
Why It's Important?
This development highlights the ongoing challenges in game development related to hardware compatibility. As technology advances, developers must balance the need to support older systems while optimizing for newer hardware. The decision to cater to HDD users reflects a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that a broader audience can enjoy the game. However, it also raises questions about the sustainability of such practices as solid-state drives (SSDs) become more prevalent and affordable.
