Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is gaining significant attention as a potential climate-adaptation solution to combat water scarcity. MAR involves using excess surface water to replenish underground aquifers, which can then be utilized during drier periods.
This practice, which has evolved since the 1960s, currently recharges an estimated 10 cubic kilometers of groundwater globally each year, though it still accounts for only about 1% of global groundwater extractions. With over 1,200 documented MAR sites in more than 50 countries, its adoption is growing, driven by increasing climate change impacts such as longer dry seasons and erratic rainfall. Evidence from 21 MAR schemes across 15 countries suggests positive or neutral effects on groundwater storage and quality, demonstrating strong returns on investment.

By effectively storing water underground, MAR can mitigate these economic burdens, support agricultural stability, and ensure more reliable water supplies for communities. Its ability to reduce evaporation losses, unlike surface reservoirs, makes it a more efficient long-term storage solution, directly impacting the sustainability of water resources and reducing the need for costly emergency water provisions.
