Robert Lyons, a retired lieutenant colonel and chaplain in the U.S. Army, spearheaded an initiative to plant nearly 500 American flags in the Stratford neighborhood of Evans, Georgia, in honor of America's upcoming 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026. The
project, which began six months prior, aimed to place a flag at each of the 492 homes in the neighborhood. Lyons, leveraging his experience in project planning from his military career, organized volunteers to assist in the effort. As of the morning of July 4, all but 41 flags had been planted, with volunteers quickly addressing the remaining homes. The initiative was part of a broader celebration that included a children's bike parade and a history lesson about the American Revolution, taught by Lyons' wife, Martha, dressed as Betsy Ross.
