What's Happening?
Missile manufacturer MBDA is partnering with French startup Fly-R and the Tawazun Council for Defense Enablement to develop loitering munitions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This initiative is part of
MBDA's broader strategy to establish a weapons development, production, and technical support capability in the UAE. The collaboration includes the creation of a Missile Engineering Center in Abu Dhabi and the establishment of MBDA UAE as a long-term industrial partner. The Fly-R munition, characterized by its high speed and maneuverability, utilizes artificial intelligence to assist operators. Additionally, MBDA is working with ASB Group to introduce thermal battery production capabilities in the UAE, which are essential for missile operations.
Why It's Important?
The development of loitering munitions in the UAE signifies a strategic enhancement of the country's defense capabilities. By localizing advanced technologies and supply chains, the UAE aims to strengthen its position as a regional hub for defense industries. This collaboration not only supports the UAE's defense sector but also aligns with MBDA's commitment to expanding its footprint in the region. The introduction of thermal battery production further underscores the UAE's ambition to attract cutting-edge technologies and bolster its defense infrastructure, potentially influencing regional security dynamics.
What's Next?
MBDA's ongoing projects, including the development of the SmartGlider family of air-launched glide bombs, are set to be integrated onto the UAE's Dassault Rafales and potentially exported. This expansion of capabilities may lead to increased defense collaborations and exports, enhancing the UAE's role in the global defense market. The partnership with MBDA could also pave the way for future technological advancements and collaborations within the defense sector.
