What's Happening?
Portage High School students recently participated in a program designed to expose them to various healthcare careers beyond the traditional roles of doctors and nurses. The students toured St. Mary Medical Center and Northwest Health Porter hospitals,
followed by a visit to Ivy Tech Community College’s Valparaiso campus. Here, they engaged in practical training sessions, such as simulated surgeries and wound care, under the guidance of medical professionals. The initiative, part of the Health Care 360 program, aims to broaden students' understanding of healthcare professions and encourage them to consider diverse career paths within the sector.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it addresses the growing need for a diverse and well-trained healthcare workforce. By exposing students to a variety of roles within the healthcare industry, the program helps to fill knowledge gaps and potentially inspire future healthcare professionals. This is crucial in a time when the healthcare sector faces staffing shortages and an increasing demand for services. Programs like Health Care 360 not only prepare students for future careers but also support economic development by ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled workers for local healthcare facilities.
What's Next?
Following the success of this program, similar initiatives may be expanded to include other high-demand sectors such as manufacturing and construction. The Portage Economic Development Corp. plans to continue supporting such programs to ensure that local industries have access to a skilled workforce. Additionally, students are encouraged to pursue dual credit courses to gain college credits while still in high school, further preparing them for their future careers.
