What's Happening?
Douglass Houghton Falls, now officially named Houghton-Douglass Falls and Veterans Memorial Scenic Site, has reopened to the public with significant improvements aimed at enhancing accessibility and safety. Located in Calumet Township, Michigan, the site
is the tallest waterfall in the state, standing at 110 feet. The development of the site is being carried out in two phases. Phase 1, completed in 2025, included the construction of a new access road, a gravel parking lot, vaulted toilets, a bridge over Hammell Creek, and an accessible pedestrian trail. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) received $1 million from the Land and Water Conservation Fund for Phase 2, which is scheduled for completion in 2027. This phase will include further development of accessible trails, observation platforms, safety barriers, and a veteran's memorial. Jesse Wiederhold, Managing Director of Visit Keweenaw, emphasized the improvements in safety and accessibility, noting that the site is now ADA compliant.
Why It's Important?
The reopening of Douglass Houghton Falls is significant for both local tourism and accessibility advocacy. By enhancing the site's infrastructure, the project aims to attract more visitors, boosting the local economy. The improvements also reflect a broader commitment to making natural attractions accessible to individuals with disabilities, promoting inclusivity in outdoor recreation. The addition of a veteran's memorial further enriches the site's cultural and historical value, potentially drawing interest from veterans and their families. The project underscores the importance of preserving natural landmarks while ensuring they are safe and accessible for all visitors.
What's Next?
Phase 2 of the development is set to begin next year, with completion expected in 2027. This phase will focus on extending the accessible trail to the falls, constructing observation platforms, and installing safety barriers. The DNR and local stakeholders will likely continue to monitor the site's usage and safety, making adjustments as necessary to accommodate increasing visitor numbers. The completion of these developments is expected to further enhance the site's appeal, potentially leading to increased tourism and economic benefits for the surrounding community.
