What's Happening?
Douglass Houghton Falls, now officially named Houghton-Douglass Falls and Veterans Memorial Scenic Site, has reopened to the public with significant improvements aimed at enhancing accessibility and safety. Located in Calumet Township, Michigan, the site
is the tallest waterfall in the state, standing at 110 feet. The development of the site is being carried out in two phases. Phase 1, completed in 2025, included the construction of a new access road, a gravel parking lot, vaulted toilets, a bridge over Hammell Creek, and an accessible pedestrian trail. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) received $1 million from the Land and Water Conservation Fund for Phase 2, which is scheduled for completion in 2027. This phase will include further development of accessible trails, observation platforms, safety barriers, and a veteran's memorial. Jesse Wiederhold, Managing Director of Visit Keweenaw, emphasized the improvements in safety and accessibility, noting that the site is now ADA compliant.
