What's Happening?
A new report from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) reveals significant disparities in electronic health record (EHR) adoption among substance use and mental health treatment facilities. The report, based on 2024
survey data, shows that 68% of these facilities use EHRs exclusively, while 25% use a combination of EHRs and paper charts. Federal government facilities have the highest adoption rate at 97%, whereas state government facilities lag with only 38% exclusive EHR adoption. The report also highlights gaps in advanced EHR capabilities, such as electronic prescriptions and lab orders, and low participation in Health Information Exchanges (HIEs).
Why It's Important?
The disparities in EHR adoption among behavioral health facilities underscore challenges in achieving comprehensive digital integration in healthcare. Facilities with lower EHR adoption may face difficulties in providing coordinated and efficient care, potentially impacting patient outcomes. The low participation in HIEs further limits the ability of these facilities to share and access critical patient information, which is essential for effective treatment. Addressing these disparities is crucial for improving the quality of care in behavioral health and ensuring that all facilities can benefit from technological advancements in healthcare.
What's Next?
Efforts to increase EHR adoption and HIE participation in behavioral health facilities are likely to continue, with potential policy interventions to support these goals. Stakeholders, including government agencies and healthcare providers, may need to collaborate to address barriers to adoption, such as funding and technical support. As the healthcare industry moves towards greater interoperability, these facilities will need to adapt to remain competitive and provide high-quality care. Future developments may include targeted initiatives to enhance EHR capabilities and increase awareness of HIE benefits among facility administrators.
