What's Happening?
Six months after Windows 10 was officially retired, over a quarter of Steam users continue to use the operating system, according to the latest Steam Hardware Survey. Windows maintains a 93.47% share among Steam users, but only 67.74% have upgraded to Windows 11.
The reluctance to switch is attributed to Windows 11's early reputation issues and its requirement for Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0, which necessitates hardware upgrades. Despite the challenges, Windows remains the dominant OS for gaming, with Linux showing modest growth.
Why It's Important?
The continued use of Windows 10 by a significant portion of Steam users highlights the challenges Microsoft faces in encouraging upgrades to Windows 11. The requirement for TPM 2.0 and the lack of compelling new features have contributed to slow adoption rates. This situation underscores the importance of balancing security enhancements with user convenience and compatibility. Microsoft's ability to address these issues will be crucial in maintaining its dominance in the PC operating system market.
