A new study from Tohoku University, published in JAMA Network Open, indicates that monitoring changes in trauma symptoms over the first two years following a disaster is a more accurate predictor of long-term mental health than a single assessment conducted
shortly after the event. Led by Professor Hiroaki Tomita and Assistant Professor Xue Li, the research followed 1,291 residents of Shichigahama whose homes were severely damaged or destroyed by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake for 15 years. The study identified five distinct long-term patterns of posttraumatic stress reactions (PTSR), revealing that 14.7% of participants continued to experience clinically significant trauma symptoms 15 years post-disaster. Crucially, individuals whose symptoms worsened between the first and second year were over five times more likely to suffer from significant trauma symptoms 15 years later, even after accounting for other factors.
