What's Happening?
TM Nxera, a joint venture between Telekom Malaysia and Nxera, is progressing with its AI-ready data center campus in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. The first phase of the project is set to commence commercial operations in the second half of 2026. The data center,
which will be one of the largest AI-ready campuses in Malaysia, is designed to support large-scale computing and AI workloads. The facility will initially have a capacity of 64MW, scalable up to 200MW, and will feature advanced technologies such as liquid cooling and eco-friendly energy systems. The project is part of Telekom Malaysia's strategy to position Malaysia as a preferred digital hub in Southeast Asia.
Why It's Important?
The development of the TM Nxera data center is significant for Malaysia's digital infrastructure, aiming to enhance the country's position as a digital hub in Southeast Asia. The facility's capacity to support large-scale AI workloads is crucial for attracting cloud hyperscalers and enterprises, potentially boosting the region's economic growth. The investment in advanced technologies and sustainable practices reflects a growing trend towards eco-friendly data solutions. This project could also enhance Malaysia's connectivity with global markets, leveraging Telekom Malaysia and Singtel's submarine cable networks.
What's Next?
As the project progresses, TM Nxera will focus on mechanical and electrical installations, system integration, and commissioning. The company is entering the customer onboarding and commercial operations stage, which is a critical milestone. The data center's strategic location within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone offers potential for cross-border digital integration, providing low-latency connectivity to Singapore and beyond. The success of this project could lead to further investments in digital infrastructure in the region.
