Boston has completed a five-year renovation of 26 Court Street, its oldest continuously city-owned property, transforming it into a modern, all-electric, and fossil fuel-free workplace. The project preserved
89% of the historic 1912 structure, which originally served as the City Hall Annex and later as the headquarters for the Boston School Department. The 175,000-square-foot building now houses multiple city departments, including the Public Facilities Department, Mayor’s Office of Housing, and the Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion. The renovation included the creation of 11 stories of office and meeting space, three levels of basement space, a reimagined lobby, and a universally accessible plaza on Court Street. Additionally, surrounding sidewalks were widened, and EV charging stations, bike racks, and flag poles were added.
