What's Happening?
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a significant increase in women's participation in Uttar Pradesh's workforce, rising from 12-15% to 35-36% over the past eight years. Speaking at the national convention
of FICCI FLO, the women's wing of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry, Adityanath emphasized the importance of women's self-reliance for societal progress. He highlighted the growth in women's numbers in police recruitment, noting an increase from 10,000 women in 2017 to 44,000 currently, with a mandatory 20% recruitment policy for women. Adityanath also cited the success of the Balini Milk Producers group in Jhansi, which grew from a small group to 62,000 women, contributing to economic self-reliance. He encouraged FICCI FLO to expand its reach and support women entrepreneurs, particularly in the readymade garments sector, as India has the opportunity to capture market share from Bangladesh.
Why It's Important?
The increase in women's workforce participation in Uttar Pradesh is a significant development for gender equality and economic growth in the region. By empowering women and increasing their presence in various sectors, the state is fostering a more inclusive and diverse workforce. This shift not only enhances the economic potential of Uttar Pradesh but also sets a precedent for other states to follow. The mandatory recruitment policy for women in the police force and the success of women's groups like the Balini Milk Producers highlight the potential for women to drive economic and social change. As women become more self-reliant, they contribute to the overall development of the state and the country, potentially leading to a more balanced and equitable society.
