What's Happening?
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is advancing its use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) to improve operational efficiency. Marcie Kahbody, the Chief Information Officer (CIO)
of Caltrans, has been instrumental in steering the department towards broader AI adoption. The initiative includes the creation of a chief data and artificial intelligence officer (CDAO) position to oversee AI policy and governance. Recently, Caltrans expanded access to Microsoft Copilot, a generative AI tool, to 18,000 employees, following a successful pilot program. The department is also developing a GIS data hub to streamline data access across various agencies under the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA), including the Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Highway Patrol. Additionally, a chatbot is being developed to help staff navigate internal websites more efficiently.
