What's Happening?
Los Alamitos High School (LAHS) has launched a new elective course in Broadcasting, led by Mr. Brown. This course is designed for students interested in television broadcasts, including news coverage and sports programming. Students in the Broadcasting class
are responsible for managing LOSAL MEDIA, @losal_athletics, and GRIFFINS ON AIR, covering a wide range of school events from Instagram posts to live reporting and hype videos for assemblies. The curriculum focuses on the practical aspects of live coverage, such as camera switching, equipment readiness, and running a broadcast with a small staff. Students gain hands-on experience in filming, editing, and producing content, often working long hours outside of class time to capture footage and complete projects. The class has already achieved significant milestones, including covering its first live football game on the LAHS John Barnes field, which was posted on Los Al Sports. This initiative evolved from a previous club focused on LoSal Athletics podcasts, with the goal of expanding coverage to all sports and performing arts events through a dedicated class.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the Broadcasting elective at Los Alamitos High School is important as it provides students with practical, real-world experience in media production and journalism. In an increasingly digital and media-driven world, skills in live broadcasting, content creation, and digital media management are highly valuable. This course offers students a unique opportunity to learn about the technical and logistical challenges of producing live events, from operating multiple cameras to directing and editing. By covering school sports and events, students are not only developing technical proficiency but also honing their storytelling abilities and understanding the importance of timely and engaging content. This hands-on approach prepares students for potential careers in broadcasting, media, or related fields, giving them a competitive edge. Furthermore, the class contributes significantly to the school community by providing high-quality media coverage of events, fostering school spirit, and keeping the student body and wider community informed and engaged.
What's Next?
The Broadcasting class at Los Alamitos High School is expected to continue expanding its coverage and refining its production capabilities. With the successful live broadcast of a football game, students will likely undertake more live productions for various sporting events and performing arts shows. The program will continue to develop students' skills in areas such as editing, graphic design, and on-camera reporting, as highlighted by students like Sebastian Martinez, who enjoys editing, and Emma Vernes, who is an on-camera sideline reporter. The class's segment on Sports Central LA, featuring Jill Painter Lopez, indicates a growing recognition of their work, which could lead to further opportunities for exposure and collaboration. Future developments may include incorporating more advanced broadcasting technologies and techniques, further integrating with social media platforms, and potentially expanding into other forms of digital content to reach a broader audience. The ongoing effort and dedication of students and Mr. Brown suggest a continuous evolution of the program, aiming for even more impressive and professional productions.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate benefits of skill development, the LAHS Broadcasting program fosters a deeper appreciation for the collaborative nature of media production. Students learn to work as a team, with each member playing a crucial role, from camera operators to directors and editors. This collaborative environment builds essential soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, and adaptability, which are vital in any professional setting. The program also instills a strong work ethic, as students often dedicate significant time outside of school hours to capture footage and edit content. This commitment to excellence, as noted by senior Sophie Long, highlights the passion and dedication required in the media industry. Furthermore, by providing comprehensive coverage of school events, the class plays a role in documenting the school's history and celebrating its achievements, creating a lasting legacy for the students involved and the broader community. The program also subtly educates the audience on the complexities and effort involved in producing seemingly effortless broadcasts, enhancing media literacy.
