What's Happening?
China is advancing its climate-resilient agricultural production system, focusing on domestic grain output and South-South cooperation. During the 14th Five-Year Plan, China achieved significant progress in agricultural resilience despite extreme weather
events. The country has strengthened its policy framework for disaster prevention, modernized irrigation infrastructure, and leveraged technology for disaster mitigation. China is also extending its efforts to the Global South, advocating for climate-resilient agriculture at multilateral forums and providing financial support. The China-International Fund for Agricultural Development South-South and Triangular Cooperation Facility has implemented projects benefiting farmers in over 40 countries.
Why It's Important?
China's efforts in building climate-resilient agriculture are crucial for global food security and climate adaptation. By enhancing its domestic agricultural resilience, China ensures stable grain production, which is vital for its population. The focus on South-South cooperation helps vulnerable regions in the Global South improve their agricultural resilience, addressing food insecurity exacerbated by climate change. China's leadership in promoting practical green technologies and capacity building supports sustainable development and strengthens international climate cooperation. These initiatives contribute to global emissions reduction commitments and foster a shared future for humanity.
What's Next?
In the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan, China plans to further enhance its climate-resilient agriculture and innovate South-South cooperation. Priorities include developing a digital disaster risk early warning system, conserving agricultural biodiversity, increasing investment in agricultural science and technology, and fostering innovation in South-South cooperation. China aims to translate its domestic experience into global public goods and promote simple, practical technologies tailored to smallholders' needs. These efforts will strengthen climate resilience and support sustainable agricultural practices globally.
