What's Happening?
Chandigarh is set to implement a self-enumeration option for the upcoming Census 2027, starting April 16. This initiative allows residents to fill out their household details online through a dedicated
portal, se.census.gov.in, which will be open for 15 days before traditional house-to-house enumeration begins. Upon submission, participants receive a unique Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) to be used for validation during field visits by census officials. This marks the first time such a digital option is available in the national census, aiming to make the process more citizen-friendly. The portal supports English and 14 regional languages, broadening accessibility. The census will also employ a mobile-based app for data collection, ensuring real-time updates to the central server. Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav emphasized the importance of comprehensive training for enumerators to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of self-enumeration in Census 2027 represents a significant shift towards digitalization in government processes, potentially increasing participation rates and data accuracy. By allowing citizens to submit their information online, the process becomes more convenient and less intrusive, which could lead to higher engagement. This method also reduces the workload on field enumerators and minimizes errors associated with manual data collection. The initiative reflects a broader trend of integrating technology into public administration, which can enhance efficiency and transparency. For Chandigarh, this could mean more accurate demographic data, aiding in better policy-making and resource allocation.
What's Next?
Following the self-enumeration period, traditional house-to-house enumeration will commence in May 2026. The city has been divided into multiple blocks, with thousands of field functionaries deployed to support the operation. The population enumeration phase is scheduled for February 2027. Officials are focusing on capacity building and high-quality training for enumerators to ensure the smooth execution of the census. Residents are encouraged to participate actively in the self-enumeration process to ensure timely and accurate data submission. The success of this initiative could influence future census operations across India, potentially setting a precedent for other regions to adopt similar digital methods.
