What's Happening?
Rockford Urban Ministries is organizing its fourth annual Blue Christmas service to honor those lost to opioid overdoses. Scheduled for December 22 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockford, the event
will focus on reflection, resources, and harm-reduction training. The service aims to provide a space for lament and reflection during a season that is not joyful for everyone. Community leaders, including Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara and Winnebago County Coroner Jennifer Muraski, will participate. A resource fair will follow, offering Narcan training and other harm-reduction supplies. The event will be livestreamed for broader access.
Why It's Important?
The Blue Christmas service highlights the ongoing opioid crisis and the need for community-based responses. By providing a platform for reflection and harm-reduction training, the event addresses both the emotional and practical aspects of the crisis. It underscores the importance of community support and advocacy for harm-reduction practices. The involvement of local leaders and organizations demonstrates a collaborative approach to tackling the opioid epidemic, which continues to affect many communities across the U.S. The service also raises awareness and encourages public engagement in efforts to prevent opioid-related deaths.
