South Africa Launches Harbour-Based Net Recycling Facility to Combat Marine Plastic Waste

South Africa has inaugurated its first harbour-based net recycling facility at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. The facility, housed in a converted shipping container, processes end-of-life fishing nets into high-value raw materials for reuse in plastic manufacturing. The initiative, led by the OCEAN Action Network and Ocean Plastic Technologies, aims to create a scalable, circular economy solution for marine plastic waste. The facility can shred, wash, dry, and densify up to 100 kilograms of used nets per hour, transforming discarded fishing gear into clean plastic flakes. This project supports South Africa's commitments under the National Environmental Management: Waste Act and aligns with global goals such as Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water.
