Abbott has obtained FDA authorization for its new continuous glucose monitor (CGM), the Libre Duo, marking it as the first 2-in-1 device capable of measuring both glucose and ketone levels. This innovation aims to provide diabetics with a more comprehensive
monitoring tool, particularly for detecting diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious complication where the body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones. The Libre Duo is designed to be worn for 10 days and functions similarly to Abbott's existing CGMs, utilizing the same app and compatibility with smartwatches. It will deliver alerts when either glucose or ketone levels approach dangerous thresholds. Marc Taub, vice president of technical operations for Abbott’s diabetes care business, stated that the sensor measures beta-hydroxybutyrate, a type of ketone, and acts as a 'check engine light' for users. This integrated monitoring system is expected to offer an actionable warning system, especially beneficial for diabetic children and individuals using insulin pumps, who face higher risks of DKA.
