What's Happening?
The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) has announced a $3.6 million grant program aimed at bolstering local food infrastructure. This initiative, revealed at the Everything Local conference in Springfield, is part of the fiscal year 2026 state
budget. The funds are designated to support local food processing, aggregation, and distribution, with grants ranging from $1,000 to $250,000 for collaborative projects and up to $75,000 for individual projects. IDOA Director Jerry Costello II emphasized the importance of strong infrastructure for agriculture, noting that the program will enhance the capacity of Illinois farmers to deliver locally grown food to consumers. Applications for the grants will be available starting February 18, 2026, on the IDOA website.
Why It's Important?
This funding initiative is crucial for strengthening the local food supply chain in Illinois. By investing in infrastructure, the program aims to support local farmers, mitigate food insecurity, and boost the local economy. State Senator Doris Turner highlighted the benefits of empowering local farmers, which include expanding access to fresh, local foods and fortifying the food system. The program is also seen as a response to rising food prices, with State Representative Sonya Harper advocating for durable solutions to move away from food deserts. The grants will help ensure that Illinois families have access to affordable, locally grown food, thereby supporting both economic and social well-being.
What's Next?
Eligible applicants, including small farms, cooperatives, and food businesses with fewer than 50 employees, can prepare for the application process by pre-registering with SAM.gov and the GATA Grantee Portal. The IDOA will provide additional information and guidance on the application process through its website. This initiative is expected to encourage further expansion of the local food industry by requiring that grant funds be used for infrastructure related to processing, storage, and distribution of agricultural products.
