What's Happening?
A recent survey conducted by The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce Foundation reveals that a significant portion of Boston's young residents, particularly those aged 20 to 30, are contemplating leaving
the city due to escalating housing costs. The survey, which included 600 participants from the Greater Boston area, found that 26% of respondents plan to move within the next five years. The high cost of rent and the difficulty of purchasing a home were cited as major factors influencing their decision. Boston's median asking rent is among the highest in the nation, and the real estate market is one of the least affordable, with median listing prices significantly above the national average. The survey also highlighted that newer residents, LGBTQ individuals, unemployed residents, students, and unmarried people are more likely to consider relocating.
Why It's Important?
The potential exodus of young, skilled residents from Boston could have significant economic implications. Young professionals contribute to the local economy through their roles in the job market, entrepreneurship, and the service sector. A decline in this demographic could lead to a reduction in economic dynamism and innovation. Additionally, the loss of young residents may impact the housing market, potentially easing rent price growth in the short term but posing long-term challenges for economic growth. The situation underscores the need for increased housing supply to meet demand and maintain affordability. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey's administration has recognized this issue, proposing a plan to add 222,000 new homes by 2035 to address the housing crisis.
What's Next?
Efforts to address Boston's housing affordability crisis are ongoing. Governor Healey's administration has already initiated a housing plan and signed The Affordable Homes Act, which allocates $5 billion for housing initiatives. However, progress has been slow, and the state received a low grade on a recent housing report card. The administration continues to emphasize the importance of housing development to retain young residents and support economic growth. As the state works to implement these plans, the focus will be on increasing housing supply across various price points and locations to ensure affordability and accessibility for all residents.
