A new study published in The Lancet Public Health challenges the long-held assumption that all physical activity is beneficial for brain health, particularly concerning dementia risk. The research, which analyzed 74 studies involving 4.2 million individuals
aged 45 to 93 across 30 countries, found a significant difference between leisure-time physical activity and occupational physical activity. While leisure activities such as swimming, running, and walking were associated with a decreased risk of dementia, physical activity performed as part of a job was linked to an increased risk. Natan Feter, the study's first author and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Southern California, stated that these findings contradict the notion that 'every move counts' for brain health. The study observed that individuals with higher levels of leisure-time physical activity had a 24% lower risk of dementia, whereas those engaged in occupational physical activity faced a 20% higher risk.
