What's Happening?
The largest supermoon of 2025, known as the beaver moon, will be visible across North America tonight. According to Space.com, this supermoon will be the closest to Earth this year, appearing 10% larger
and brighter than a typical full moon. The moon will be 221,817 miles from Earth, making it the closest approach of the year. The beaver moon turned full at approximately 8 a.m. EST and will be visible near the constellation Aries. For optimal viewing, observers are advised to find an elevated location with a clear view of the eastern horizon. A livestream of the event will be available from the Virtual Telescope Project starting at 2 p.m. EST.
Why It's Important?
Supermoons are significant astronomical events that capture public interest and provide opportunities for education and engagement with space science. This particular supermoon, being the largest of the year, offers a unique chance for stargazers and the general public to witness a celestial phenomenon that appears only a few times annually. The event also highlights the importance of astronomical research and public outreach efforts, such as those by the Virtual Telescope Project, which make such events accessible to a wider audience. The visibility of the supermoon across North America ensures that millions of people can experience this natural spectacle.
