What's Happening?
The Karnataka government has issued an advisory banning the sale and promotion of junk food within a 50-meter radius of schools and colleges. This move aims to create healthier food environments for students amid rising concerns over childhood obesity
and lifestyle-related illnesses. The advisory, issued by the State's Food Safety and Drug Administration, extends beyond school canteens to include vendors outside school gates. It emphasizes the implementation of existing regulations under the Food Safety and Standards (Safe Food and Balanced Diets for Children in School) Regulations, 2020.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it addresses the growing public health issue of childhood obesity, which can lead to serious health problems like diabetes and hypertension later in life. By restricting access to high-fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) foods, the advisory aims to instill healthier eating habits in children, potentially reducing the long-term burden of non-communicable diseases. The move also highlights the role of schools in shaping dietary habits and the importance of creating supportive food environments for children.
