What's Happening?
The City of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy have been honored with a 2026 Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Award for their restoration of the Valley River Refuge Shelter at Riverview Park. This project, completed in 2025, focused on preserving
the historical integrity of the shelter while updating its facilities. The restoration included repairing masonry, replacing the roof, updating electrical systems, and improving accessibility. Originally built in the late 1930s, the shelter is a significant community gathering place and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2021. The project was funded by the City of Pittsburgh’s Parks Tax Trust Fund, a Keystone Historic Preservation Construction Grant, and private donations.
