What's Happening?
The Sindh government has launched a new carbon credit trading initiative aimed at restoring biodiversity and generating economic benefits through reforestation in the riverine areas of the Matiari and Jamshoro districts. This initiative, executed under
a public-private partnership, involves planting native tree species such as acacia and prosopis over 34,000 hectares. The project is expected to generate approximately 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) over a 22-year cycle. The Sindh forest department, which owns significant tracts of riverine forests, has reclaimed land previously usurped for monetary gains, thanks to interventions by the Sindh High Court. The initiative is part of a broader effort to sell carbon credits in the international market, with the Sindh government retaining a majority of the earnings.
