What's Happening?
The US Navy is set to significantly increase the production of Medium Uncrewed Surface Vessels (MUSVs) as part of its strategic naval operations. According to the US Navy Shipbuilding Plan, the production of these
autonomous vessels will double between 2027 and 2031. The MUSVs are designed for various roles, including anti-submarine warfare and convoy escort, and are expected to become a crucial component of the naval fleet. The Navy plans to build 36 units in 2026 and three more in 2027, with the MUSV segment projected to constitute 10% of the total naval vessel force by 2027 and over 18% by 2031. The FY27 budget allocates $171 million for the procurement of three vessels and a total investment of $3.1 billion over five years to acquire 47 MUSVs.
