Kindergarten students at Bellefonte Elementary School are participating in a new English Language Arts curriculum that includes exploring agriculture and farm life. As part of this educational initiative,
the students engaged in a virtual session with Dustin Gearhart, a farmer from the Mount Union area. Gearhart, who is also a Penn State Animal Science graduate, shared insights into his farming practices, including the types of crops and livestock he manages. The session included a slideshow presentation featuring farm animals such as beef cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens, as well as farm equipment like tractors and combines. The students were able to ask questions and learn about the processes involved in planting and harvesting crops like hay, corn, and soybeans. Teacher Lea McCartney emphasized the importance of understanding agriculture as a vital part of the community and the value of knowing where food and resources originate.
