What's Happening?
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nigeria, in collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has launched the Mine-Tech University Innovation Pod (UniPod) at Nasarawa State University. This initiative aims to foster innovation
in mineral development by providing specialized laboratories, prototyping spaces, and technology transfer offices. The launch is part of a broader effort to transition Nigeria from exporting raw minerals to building a technology-driven mining economy. Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by the Minister of Education, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative in connecting education, research, and industrialization. The Mine-Tech UniPod is one of several thematic UniPods established across Nigeria, focusing on areas such as Artificial Intelligence and Green Technology.

The establishment of the Mine-Tech UniPod is significant for Nigeria's economic development, as it aims to enhance the country's capacity for value addition and industrial processing in the mining sector. With over 44 commercially viable minerals, Nigeria has the potential to become a key player in the global market for critical minerals used in electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. The Federal Government plans to establish an additional 20 UniPods across Nigeria by the end of the year to further deepen innovation and enterprise development within universities. The Nasarawa State government has committed to providing sustainable power supply for the facility, ensuring uninterrupted operations. The initiative is expected to attract investors, development partners, and private sector players to support research, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer. As the UniPod network expands, it could significantly enhance Nigeria's capacity for innovation and industrialization, contributing to the country's long-term economic growth.
