Researchers at the University of Nottingham have conducted a study using big data and machine learning to improve antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance in livestock production. The study, published in Nature Food, analyzed microbiomes from chickens,
carcasses, and environments over two and a half years. The research identified antimicrobial resistant genes (ARGs) shared between chickens and their environments, which are potentially highly transmissible. The study highlights the influence of environmental factors like temperature and humidity on the core chicken gut microbiome and its correlation with AMR profiles of E. coli.
